Monday I was alerted by my eye doctor that I could have diabetes. My vision had change alot since April (actually since October). Saw my gp, took a lot of blood, blood glucose is 345, glucose in urine > 2000. I'm supposed to see him next week for further instructions, maybe even a script. Woowho. One thing I forgot to ask about was this horrible metallic taste in my mouth, I've had for the last 3weeks, about the time the drinking mega amounts of water began. It's gotten so bad that it makes water taste like salty iron. Is this a part of diabetes? If so, when does it go away?

Hi Lostinmedland!
I don't recall seeing anything that said a metallic taste was a symptom of diabetes, but it is a side effect of some of the medicines taken for diabetes. I found some links below for information that will help you when it's time to see your doctor. This will help you ask all the right questions and inform yourself. Blood glucose for a fasting blood test at 345 is really up there!
When I was diagnosed, the first thing I read was the overview about diabetes located here. Then I moved on to the symptoms because I realized that I had symptoms I was not expecting and I did not exhibit symptoms I thought I should which contributed to my not getting medical help for some time. The symptoms list is located here. Then I started looking into the medications I was being prescribed. Found out why some drugs were causing certain effects and others weren't working well. The drug database is located here. Finally, I figured, there has to be a better way and I checked into the treatment database to learn about new treatments and new protocols. I have also been an avid reader of David Mendosa for sometime (profile shareposts)
The best thing about Health Central is that there is a fantastic community here of people just like you living it all one day at a time. If you ever feel the need to vent or want to share a particularly good day for you, or just need to ask a question, feel free to post and lots of folks will answer.
I hope you will stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!!

I would be more concerned that you think that "diabetes for dummies" is the gospel truth - it would seem to me that if two doctors and an internet search failed to reveal anything about this, that questioning the source should be your first line of thought.
When I finally saw an endocronologist, she said it could have been kidney related or something else.
The docs I had been seeing were not giving that much information and not really talking about a plan of attack.
