Hi Sharon!
You have come to a very good place to find information about type 2 diabetes. While it's always best to consult your doctor, there is a lot of really useful tools and information here, resident experts and lots of friends like me, who just like you, are living with type 2 diabetes every day! Check out the introduction to type 2 diabetes located here. You can check causes, symptoms, read about current medications and treatments and learn about new break throughs in the treatment of diabetes.
Before you begin any real treatment, you need to have a doctor you can speak to and trust. It's possible that your general practicioner is the person who diagnosed your diabetes, but that doctor may not be the best person to help you work through the issues of being diabetic. You should see an endocrinologist for the diabetes who will also have you speak to a nutritionist. If you don't feel that your current doctor is helpful, perhaps it's time to ask for a referal for an endocrinologist.
Secondly, here are some really good resources online here that will help you. You should read shareposts written by the resident experts. David Mendosa has been writing about diabetes for a long time, in fact, I read some of his work years ago before Healthcentral.com was ever around. He writes about the glycemic index of foods. That is, calculating the rate a particular food raises the blood sugar level through carbohydrates. You can read more about the Glycemic index here. David's profile is located here and from there you can read his shareposts. Dr. Bill Quick is another resident expert here and you can read his shareposts here. Dr Quick and his wife are authors of The Diabetes Monitor, one of the oldest and a very well respected website for diabetes information. You can read Dr Quick's shareposts here.
I know it seems like a lot of reading and it is. But by starting here at Healthcentral.com, you have a jump on getting the information you need to have, so when you have those conversations with your doctor, you can ask informative questions and manage your health to the best of your ability.
Again, Welcome to Healthcentral. I hope you will stay in touch and let us know how you are doing! Feel free to ask questions or leave comments about your own specific challenges.
Take care!
