Loosing It

By Sue Wednesday, September 24, 2008

My husband was recently diagonsed (6 wks ago) with type 1 diabetes.  He's being treated with an oral medication, which is contradictory to everything I've read.  How do I determine which type he has? or isn't it that important?  Also he refuses to test himself.  He's told his doctor, nurse, and dietician that he will NOT test himself.  I've tried to explain how the testing will help, that if testing is high we can determine what it was that put it there or visa versa and that next time we can try to prevent it from happening again.  He just doesn't seem to be accepting of it.  He is dreadfully fearful of the complications.  His A1C test was just done and he didn't even register on the chart it was so high (14% - 360)  I tried to comfortingly explain that being a three month average that it mostly included his previous two months of not being treated.  I'm really worried and concerned about his health and what the severity of his sugar levels have been for so long, I know it's been very high for a long time (more than a year) because I clean the bathroom (I'm sorry for being so gross, but it's the truth.)  Strangest thing of all is that he really doesn't eat alot of crap foods and he's not at all overweight, only about 150 lbs.  He hasn't gained any weight in about 10 yrs., actually dropped nearly 100 lbs. in 10 yrs.   I'm sorry for rambling on so long, but I need to know if I'm being rediculous or what?  I wish there were a way to convince him to test.25th Anniversary This picture was taken last year, our 25th anniversary.
