Survived Halloween

By type1parent.com Saturday, November 01, 2008

This was our first Halloween since our son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes back in August.  He's really been an absolute champ through the first few months but we were worried about how he'd do with all the temptation of candy around with Halloween.

Luckily, he already knew the dangers of not paying attention to what he eats and he consistently stays away from sweets.  Even at only 7 years old, he's become very cognizant of his condition and has been strong with its management.

We discussed the upcoming Halloween and he accepted that he can't just dig into the candy right when he gets it.  We've set plans on when he can have some of his candy and he also set about trading with his friends, exchanging his bounty for small toys of theirs.

We arrived home last night after a full session of trick-or-treating and he was in great spirits.  Being a Type 1 Parent has been tough and I knew Halloween would be a serious test for us, but I'm really glad we succeeded with flying colors.
