My husband had an appointment with a diabetic dietician today at the diabetic clinic. At first, he was very pessimistic about the appointment - he was expecting what he has always gotten from dieticians and/or nutritionists: the outright denial that a high-fibre diet would pretty much take him out of real, regular life forever. Having colitis as a child, and having his colon removed surgically makes him very sensitive to fiber. I told him to try his best to keep an open mind, otherwise he isn't going to hear ANYTHING the dietician is going to say.
On paper, my husband looks like a disaster. Our family doctor had the word URGENT in bold and boxed in at the top of the referral sheet, checked off "obesity" and recorded his A1C as 13. The dietician told him that she was going to prescribe him medication right away if it wasn't for the BG test that they took at the appointment. His appointment was after breakfast, and he showed a 7.4. Well, that's just amazing (when you consider the results that got him to this point to begin with: 13 and 11 fasting).
They had a great appointment, and my husband left feeling armed with information and felt empowered to really take care of himself. We went grocery shopping and read labels and made informed choices. He was actually excited about his food selections, instead of being depressed about it like he has been for the last few days.
One cool thing too was when they discussed the issue of exercise. He confessed to her that we had been playing Wii Sports to get at least a little bit of activity into our day. She said that it was one of the best things that we could do - tennis, boxing and even bowling. She said that there are plans in Ontario to start putting Wii's in nursing homes. Those brilliant people at Nintendo! Anyhow, we are planning on getting into some more "traditional" forms of exercise, but while our baby is small, Wii is working out quite well.
Today was a good day. My husband feels a lot less scared about food. And he has tested anywhere from 6.1 to 7.5 today (now that we just got a BG monitor, we actually have an idea as to how we are doing!).
