My husband is a three-week old diabetic, and he has come a long way. Previous to his diagnosis, he was a guy who enjoyed what food or drink he wanted, when he wanted. Now, that sounds like he's super gluttonous, but actually he doesn't often over do it. He just really enjoys his soft drinks and juices. He's not even a really big dessert person. He is heavy for his height, and is working on losing it.

Since his diagnosis, he is has been diligent at checking his BG levels and learning what makes his levels spike and what helps him remain within a good range. Before he was pretty reluctant to eat any vegetables aside from lettuce and tomato salads, but now he's looking for ones that helps him stay healthy. I don't blame him for not eating many vegetables since usually they send him to the bathroom for most of the day due to his history of colitis. We've been looking for not-so-fibrous vegetables or those that don't affect him too much and these have been working great for him: spinach (especially baby), zucchini, and asparagus. That's not much, but it's a great beginning.

He's been doing so well that some days, his levels at night are only 6.7. He managed to do that twice in a row a couple of nights ago. It's just finding out what works for him and keeping at it. This is very different to what I was expecting three weeks ago when he was first diagnosed. We're still enjoying much of what we used to enjoy, but feeling very proud of how healthy we're working at being.
