He's learning

My husband is a three-week old diabetic, and he has come a long way. Previous to his diagnosis, he was a guy who enjoyed what food or drink he wanted, when he wanted. Now, that sounds like he's super gluttonous, but actually he doesn't often over do it. He just really enjoys his soft drinks and juices. He's not even a really big dessert person. He is heavy for his height, and is working on losing it.

Since his diagnosis, he is has been...

Encouraging Update

My husband had an appointment with a diabetic dietician today at the diabetic clinic. At first, he was very pessimistic about the appointment - he was expecting what he has always gotten from dieticians and/or nutritionists: the outright denial that a high-fibre diet would pretty much take him out of real, regular life forever. Having colitis as a child, and having his colon removed surgically makes him very sensitive to fiber. I told him to try...

Education

So far, in our new journey in diabetic land, we are still just out the door. We've received his diagnosis and we've been working on educating ourselves, which is piece-y at best. Tomorrow, my husband goes to his first class - Ontario Health Insurance provides these diabetic education classes to learn about nutrition, exercise and measuring glucose levels.

Over the last week or more we've just been doing our best at guessing what is good...

New diagnosis, would like to connect with you!

My husband was recently diagnosed with type II - Friday, June 27. We've shed a few tears together, but we are committed to working together to make the adjustments that will allow to continue a happy and healthy life. I'm happy to have found this online community. I am hoping that we can connect with some other people, who are young in particular - or who have had diabetes since you've been young, that are living with this so that we can share...
