Taking "Control" Out of Diabetes
An evening with Jessica Bernstein, Psy.D.
Psychologist specializing in type 1 diabetes/chronic illness "Blood & Honey" documentary film director and producer/living with type 1 diabetes for 38 Years

DATE: Wednesday, September 15, 2010
TIME: 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
PLACE: Congregation Etz Chayim; 4161 Alma Street, Palo Alto, CA

In a controversial talk, Psychologist Jessica Bernstein sparks debate about our current method of approaching diabetes care with the goal of controlling the condition. Dr. Bernstein, who has had type 1 diabetes since age one, will discuss two key questions:

  • Is it possible to control diabetes?
  • Is it healthy to approach diabetes care with the mindset of trying to control the condition?

Through excerpts from her documentary film (now in production) entitled "Blood & Honey" (www.bloodandhoney.org), Dr. Bernstein will present varying views about the "myth of control." This talk will provide you with new ideas for approaching diabetes care that could improve the psychological experience of diabetes for anyone diagnosed with type 1 or 2 diabetes, adult or child.

Dr. Bernstein has a private practice in Oakland focused on people with diabetes.

RSVP to Rachel Cox at coxbr@aol.com or (650)329-0380.

Hi Tresskate,

I'm a JDRF board member and former Outreach chair for CapitolChapter!  If you guys need any help figuring out how to launch the adult gatherings, you should talk to Sara Pray at our local chapter, she is our fabulous office manager and spearheaded the program we call AT1 (Adults with type 1).

We have get togethers once a month a local place, could be local pub, someone's house or we did an ice skating gig downtown during the winter where we skated among ice sculptures.

They have their own site: http://at1jdrfcapitolchapter.ning.com/  It's been very successful and it has tightened our relationship with each other and the chapter!

Thanks so much!  I'm always looking for new tips on how to better T1 support... it's become a passion of mine after I helped launch diabeteens as one of their first bloggers in 2007.  The bay area chapter has been trying to better their outreach programs for adults so I will definetly bring this up next time I see the outreach manager.
