I am a three time cancer survivor living in Northern California.

I have had three primary cancers resulting in two surgeries and two...

08/23/08

I was diagnosed about 25 years ago as a type 2 diabetic. I am now 54. I started out on insulin but am now down to Actos and occosionally even have to stop that because of low blood sugar. A few years ago I had a very low blood sugar attack which landed me in the hospital with a coma for 5 days. The Drs could not figure out why I was in a coma for long. When I finally came around, I had a complete change of personality. Where I was once fun loving and very outgoing, I am now very quiet and even a bit shy at parties. (I used to be able to really "work a room"). I recently participated in a clinical trial involving PET/CT to diagnose cancer. The first PET scan that was done could not be used because of intense uptake of FDG by my muscles (a second one was fine). In trying to research the cause of the problem with the first one, I came across references to Insulinoma. In researching that, I came across references to Multiple endocrine neoplasia Type 1. I was diagnosed with a pineal cyst years ago that is still visible on CT scans (though much smaller). I am also trisomy XXX (triple X chromosomes). It occurs to me that the weird issues with my first PET but not my second could be caused by fluctuations in insulin production. As I already have one genetic issue, it does not seem to be a reach to think I could have another. The earlier diagnosis of a pineal cyst goes toward confirming Multiple endocrine neoplasia Type 1. I think I will have a blood test for the genetic issue of Multiple endocrine neoplasia Type 1. Do you think that is too much of a stretch? Am I overanalyzing and overthinking things? Or should I persue the question? The Insulinoma would explain the coma and the various times I have had hypoglycimic experiences ans the odd PET results.  An insulinoma could be explained by Multiple endocrine neoplasia Type 1. Or am I just being paranoid?
