Hi John's Daughter,
Generally, diabetics should eat a healthy diet of complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, vegetables, and fruit, just like everyone else. The types of meals that are particularly difficult for diabetics to manage include refined carbohydrates (white rice, pasta, bread, sugary desserts, etc.) Also, meals with high fat contents can raise blood sugars for several hours after the meal.
People with type 1 diabetes can typically cover most food items with an accurate dose of insulin (easier said than done!) While type 2 diabetics who are not taking insulin will experience high blood sugars after eating meals with a lot of carboydrates. For the most part, diabetics don't have to avoid any particular food completely, as long as they practice portion control and take their medication properly.
Good luck!
I was told to limit my intake of the following:
Fatty bacon (can have back bacon with fat trimmed off)
Mutton and lamb (it has the most fat)
High fat beef (so choose topside ground beef instead of regular etc)
Processed meats with high fat content (so choose a "lite" brand of hamburger, hotdog etc)
The following are better choices:
Lean chicken (no skin, visible fat removed)
Fish (especially those rich in Omega 3, like salmon and tuna)
Ostrich
Venison, game
Pork (with all visible fat removed)
HTH.
