Saturday, August 14, 2010 Linda Gail Smith asks

Q: I just read the article on diet soda and have a question about artificial sweeteners in general.

I also use Splenda in my iced tea and hot coffee and tea. Are the dangers the same as in drinking diet soda? What about cooking with Splenda? I use it to make desserts. Should I go back to using regalur sugar?   I have been drinking Diet Coke for 25-30 years and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2009. I still drink Diet Coke but I have stopped drinking 3-5 a day and now drink only 1-2 depending on how hot it is or if I am eating out and what I'm eating. I also drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. I guess what I want to know is "Should I give up diet sweeteners?"

Thank You.

There's a natural non-caloric sweetener called Stevia that's supposed to be safe...been in use in Japan for decades - even by CocaCola. It's use in the U.S. has been restricted - only as a "dietary supplement" - but in 2008 it finally got approval for "normal" use as a sweetener. Still, it hasn't been used much yet in the U>S>, but there are a few drinks on grocery store shelves that have it and probably will become the next BIG non-caloric sweetener...best thing is it's natural and has been used for centuries in places like South America without any negative effects.
