Basically, as much as you're able when you're first diagnosed, so you
learn how various things affect your BG levels. This may depend on how many
strips your doctor allows you.

If strips are limited, you can test at different times each day to try
to get a feeling for how things are affecting you. Or you can stop testing
for a few days, stockpile strips and then test often on one day.

The times to test depends somewhat on what you want to learn from the test.

Good times are fasting, before meals, 1 hour after meals if you want to
know how high you go, 2 hours after meals if you want to know how much you're
able to come down after a high, bedtime, before and after exercise, and anytime you feel low.

I discuss this in more detail in my book The First Year: Type 2
Diabetes.
