Q: Will the increases in bg levels during moderate to strenuous exercise cause damage - just read

how it can be controlled with pump or insulin but what if the person is on metformin twice a day and exercises at noon?  I recently ate a light lunch, went out and raked leaves for two hours, took a break, went inside and took bg level - it was 152 - didn't know to wait 30 min. to an hour to check it - I had a 15-carb snack anyway but didn't check it again - this gets pretty complicated........... any suggestions?  do the rises in levels during exercise cause damage to the kidneys, etc. ?

Sue-

You should be ok as long as your blood sugar drops down.  Damage to your kidneys is due to uncontrolled blood glucose levels over a number of years.  If you are controlled and staying in the "normal" range your kidneys should be fine. Rule of thumb check bg's before you exercise and about 30 minutes after you exercise for a more "accurate" reading.
