Q: I started Lantus and cannot stop eating, have noticed more cravings

I recently started Lantus insulin and have a terribly increased appetite and crave more carbohydrate foods.  I am going to a trainer and she does not understand why I don't lose weight.  I work out heavily with cardio and weights two days a week and cardio at least two other days.  Even though I feel better she makes me feel guilty because I cannot meet her expectations.

Ashley, insulin is a hormone that increases fat and fluid storage.  It calls upon your body for more calories, and holds onto to them tightly.  Carbohydrates turn to glucose, which turns to fat faster than the two other classes of food.  Regardless of hype, fat eaten does not turn into fat worn under your skin.  See if you can lower your carbs to the Atkins induction level.  The first two weeks will be murder, but you may begin to see weight loss again.  I am an insulin user too, have doubled my dosage because of kidney problems leading to no more metformin, ever.  Gaining weight, craving carbs so I KNOW how you are feeling.  And speaking of metformin, do you take it?  Can you if you don't?  It will sensitize you to insulin, perhaps enough that you can lower your lantus usage.
