How can I tell my eyesight is affected by diabetes
Since my annual exam and change of prescription lenses, which was slight, I notice difference in my daily vision such as ability to focus clearly
Hi Bert,
The only way to truly know whether your eyes have been affected by diabetes is to have a dilated eye exam. Diabetics are encouraged to have this test performed annually (which it sounds like you have). The critical part of our eyes that can be damaged by diabetes are the retinas. Your eye doctor will look for bleeding blood vessels in the retina, which, if left untreated, can eventually lead to blindness.
From what I understand, many diabetics undergo routine laser treatments to remedy the bleeding blood vessels in the early stages.
Perhaps the blurry vision you've been experiencing can be linked to high blood sugars. The only time I needed glasses was when I was 12 years old and my eyesight was slightly off, just months before being diagnosed with diabetes. Once my blood sugars were controlled, my vision returned to normal.
Check with your doctor... it could be that your new prescription just isn't working for you.
Good luck,
Kelsey
