I am the parent of a teenager living with Type 1.   When my child is 500, I have him take a correction dose of insulin to bring it down.  It is usually back to normal in 3 hours.  i also try to determine why he is that high and fix the problem.   If you are also vomiting and sick and have high ketones, this is a problem and you ought go to ER.
