My doctor refuses to carry on with my trial of the Byetta pen because it is too expensive??

I have been under a trial of the Byetta pen with my local Diabetic clinic at the hospital because my blood sugar's were through the roof, I am into my second month and it has worked better than they expected.

My blood sugar levels have dropped and I have acctually started to loose weight for the first time in my life.

But now my own GP refuses to take on the prescribe of the drug because it is too expensive, and the hospital said they can not carry on with the trial because of the same reason.

Where does that leave me? it looks like I will now go from a type2 diabetic to a type1 needing to be on insulin for life, who is going to pick up the cost of this???

Byetta is expensive. If you can't pay for it yourself, you have several options.

1. Find a clinical study that uses Byetta. Joslin Diabetes Center is sponsoring several of these. If you're not close to Joslin, Center Watch also keeps track of trials throughout the country.

2. If your income is low, you can write to the drug company and explain that you can't afford their medication. Sometimes they'll give it to you free. It involves a lot of paperwork, as you have to reapply every few months, but it might be worth it.
