Why did my blood sugar rise from 100 to 122 after 10 minute strenuous exercise before breakfast?
I am doing everything I know to do to break the weight loss plateau I have been on for 8-10 weeks. One suggestion to get my fat to burn was to do about 10 minutes of strenuous exercise before breakfast, which involved going up 5 fights of stairs, cool down for 2-3 minutes, then do the 5 flights of stairs again and cool down. I took my blood sugar about 15 minutes after I finished this exercise. It was 122!! About 10 minutes after I got out of bed this morning it was 100.
A few months ago, before I went on Actos (I have been on Metformin since November) if I walked 10-30 minutes my blood sugar dropped 10-20 points. Now I can walk at it goes up.
Yes, I am on a low carb diet and that has brought my morning average from the 120's down to the 90's to low 100's. I have been doing the stairs like this for 4-6 weeks now, but usually after breakfast (or even later in the day on my days off).
I was diagnosed with Type 2 just before Thanksgiving 2007.
Certain types of exercise (specifically weight training and other non-aerobic exercise) can actually create glucose in the body by breaking down muscle tissue. When i weightlift heavily, I don't take in any extra carbs before exercising because of this.
Also, exercise or any kind of stress can cause the body to produce cortisol, which can also increase glucose levels.
Either way, though, an incrase of 100 to 122 really isn't anything to worry about, but a regular increase of 100 to something over 180 (for example) after exercise would imply you should probably consider what you're eating before exercise and whether you should take insulin (if you take insulin) beforehand.

Hi! I have insulin resistance and take metformin as well. I have been trying this for a couple of weeks and it is working so far.
First any strenuous/high intensity exercise will actually raise your bs.
Don't go more than 5 hours without eating something. When you do this your liver releases glycogen which triggers insulin release and causes high bs.
Eat a healthy snack right before bed... I like yogurt or a teaspoon of peanut butter. I have noticed better weight loss with the yogurt. (I get dannon all natural blueberry)
I also read that yogurt before bed is good too because the enzymes in it prevent your body from using your muscles for energy during that fasting time.
Eat soon after waking, even if it is just a little something before you can get breakfast.
I have been doing a diet similar to this and doing easy yoga poses and light strength training and have noticed a few pounds difference in just a short time.... I have tried everything over the last 5 years to lose instead of gain and my weight stayed the same or would creep up little by little.
Here's a sample of what I eat a day:
I have my one 12oz bottle of coke a day :)
breakfast - 1 piece of texas toast with a thin layer of peanut butter or one egg and one piece of no nitrate microwave bacon - eckrich i think - blue label and one piece of toast.
at work about every 2-4 hours as needed
- instant strawberries and cream oatmeal
- wedge of laughing cow light swiss cheese with whole wheat sundried tomato triscuits
- little can v8
- couple slices of no nitrate bacon or cheddar cheese or yogurt, etc
dinner - natural hormel chunk chicken in can flavored different ways with a veggie or two or burritos or chili, etc.
or most often a whole wheat arnold dutch smooth sandwich with hormel no nitrate/nitrite sandwich meat - deli deluxe real cheese slice - olive oil kraft mayo with handful cheddar sunchips
night snack - yogurt or strawberry milk
water all day and some green tea/black tea
Hope this helps! If you need anything please don't hesitate. :) Heather
