Q: diet for person not on any medication for diabetes but trying to keep readings down

I have readings of (Canadian) between 8.2 and 9.9 and am trying to control my diabetes with diet.  We have a history of diabetes in my family. I am 71 years of age, am not on any diabetes medication yet and do not want to be.  I do have controlled (with medication) High Blood Pressure.  I would like a diet that I can follow and that will help control my condition.

A low-carb diet will help you control your blood sugar levels and often helps with blood pressure too. But only you and a dietician working together can determine a diet that you will be able to stick to. We all have different food preferences.

I myself would rather be on some medication (generic metformin is cheap and although some people get GI problems at first, these generally disappear) than having blood sugar levels up to 9.9, as this can lead to heart disease as well as other complications.

However, a low-carb diet might do as well for you.
