Financial problems buying good food
Many of us are experiencing extremely stressful times, econmically. We are forced to go without healthy foods or make difficult choices as to which medicine we can afford to take today.
With this in mind, how can we afford to buy the healthy types of food we need to feed family members who have diabetes? Veggies are sky high. Carbs are there for the taking, but they are deadly.
Can you help us in coming up with avenues to obtain the healthy foods that we need?
Groceries in general have gone sky high.

I so agree with you on that !! I spend way more money trying to eat healthy. I don't know if you have a Sam's Club or costco, but sometimes buying in quantity helps. I try to buy my veggies at the lower priced grocer like Walmart. Often, you will find grocers run Buy one get one free for chicken breasts for instance. When that happens, I stock up and freeze them. I don't know what your diet consists of -- if you do eat grains, try buying them in bulk. Unfortuantely, I do not have a Whole Foods near me. But, the local health food store has 15% discount on the last Saturday of the month. As far as nuts, sometimes you can find some real bargains in the baking department of your local grocer also. If egg beaters are too pricey, then buy real eggs, and discard the yolk, if you are limiting fats. If you ever buy a roast chicken, and can't eat it all, freeze the rest. These often go on sale. As far as Greek yogurt, I try to buy the biggest size for that and flaxseed meal, because it saves you money, usually close to $2.00 if you buy the larger one. Also, check in your area for farmer's markets, co-ops, or local farms that may have great deals. Often, I have a yogurt protein powder smoothie for breakfast - I know that saves money ! I try to buy my 24 pack bottled water on sale. If you seek not to pay full price, often you will find a deal ! Don't laugh - but I shop at more than one place, because some places do not have my brands and preferences. For example, if the veggies are cheapest at Walmart, but Kroger has a sale Buy one get one Free: Tyson chix breasts, then I may make a trip to both. Oh, and my ten pound turkey gave me a lot of meals, so sometimes it's good to make more, and freeze the extra. Low fat cheeses I find are pricey, and I try to buy the cheese sticks on sale. One more thing, when you find your favorite item or even salad dressing is on sale, don't be afraid to buy more than one. You will save in the long run. I do that with TP too, which is non-food, but adds up ! I hope this helps a bit. Look at it this way- by eating healthier today, you will be saving on a long list of meds years from now.

You are right times are hard for us all. I agree with everything MM said if you can buy bulk you should and also stock up on the items you like. I would recommend clipping coupons from the Sunday paper and watch the ad's carefully. I know Walmart takes competitor's coupons and ad's. I would also see if you have a discount grocery store in your area, you can usually find good deals there. You have to shop around to find the good deals. Good luck
