Q: If I watch my carb intake, I automatically watch the sugar intake, is that correct?

Carbs consist of sugars.  You can not have more sugars than carbs.  So if I choose something with 15 carbs, sugars will be less than 15.  You can not have something with 15 carbs and 25 sugars, it would end up being 25 carbs at the very least. So as I watch my carb intake, I automatically watch the sugar intake.  I have been able to maintain great glucose levels this way.  My meals consist of between 30 to 45 carbs and snacks consist of around 15 carbs if I have snacks.

Your technique is logical, so it must be right :).  "Carbohydrate" is shorthand for carbon and H2O, and  sugar is made up of carbon and water, so it is a carbohydrate (CHO).  Since your blood sugar control is good, obviously you should keep on doin what you're doin.  However, you should be aware that some carbohydrates are actually healthy for diabetics!  This would be soluble fiber- it is a CHO, but is not broken down into sugar as much as other carbs.  In fact, soluble fiber slows blood sugar rises after meals, and increases satiety as well.  This is why, for CHO counting, you can subtract 1/2 g fiber from the total carbs in a food.  So all diabetics should eat more soluble fiber, which is found in oatmeal, beans/peas, nuts, fruit skins (apple. orange), and veggies (carrots).  And since weight loss is generally healthy, this is one reason why docs tell EVERYBODY to eat more fruits and veggies!

Suz,

Yes, you are correct. Sugars come under Carbs - hence watch out for Carbs.

Thanks
