Hi Run rabbit run!

I am a runner too and my pre race favs are actually two days prior more carb heavy dinner and the day before I actually add protein to hold me thru the race.  so for example, my husband and I make a pasta dish as a main meal on Thursday, Friday I have a dinner like fish, with rice and veggies and race morning I actually haul my butt out of bed and have a bowl of oatmeal at 5AM.  Post race it all depends, but my reach is usually for lots of water, I usually do a stew or soup and salad, but those are my picks.  some people are ravenous after running, my appetite tends to decrease.

I'm tapping some of my other running friends who are diabetic as well to help offer ideas!  On the teen(diabeteens) site check out Anna and Svati's posts.  They are both avid and accomplished runners!

Which half marathon are you running?

Hello!

I agree with Ann- both carbs and protein are important.  One of my favorite pre-race meals is squash.  I recommend it because it is both delicious and healthy- Spaghetti squash, acorn squash, and butternut squash are all good sources of low glycemic complex carbohydrates, fiber, and antioxidants such as vitamin A.  You can look up the exact carbohydrate count for different squash varieties online, and design a fabulous pre-race dinner around which ever type you are craving.

As far as post-race recovery, I would recommend packing a bag with a few different snacks, such as pretzels, sports bars, or  a banana.  I find that sometimes I am not hungry after a race for a while, so it is nice to have choices.

Good luck with your training and racing!

Anna
