Jen-
Hello! I don't think your wrong. I have been on insulin for about 7 months and I have gained weight, maybe about 8 pounds. Speaking from my own experience, I was told by my Endo that my body is back to normal and not starving from what it was lacking which is insulin. I have cut back on my carbs and it has helped me maintain the weight that I currently am. I am slowly put surely trying to exercise again. You are not alone. I know there are a lot of people who pick up weight after they start insulin.

I have been Type I since 1985 and have been on all insulins. I have gained approx 25lbs in the last 24months+ I have been on Lantus/Humalog. I was a bean poll when I was on Humalin NPH/R. I hardly eat anything and can not loose any consistant weight while taking this insulin.
I completely relate to your experience! I have taken insulin since 1994 and always maintained the same healthy weight - even after having two babies! Then, I switched to Lantus and over the past year to year and a half I have gained around 25 pounds and am beside myself because I don't know what to do to get rid of it. I have never been heavy like I feel now, and even after running my first half-marathon a few months ago I cannot shed a pound. I am hoping that switching back to Humalog/NPH instead of Lantus will help me return to my regular weight. It is pretty scary. Did you end up switching back to a different insulin, or have you stayed on Lantus ? I realize your post is pretty old but I thought I'd reply because it spoke to me!!
Hi,
I gained 26 lbs. from May-August from Lactus/actos. Providers are like that shouldn't happen but not everyone can tolerate ACTOS without signfigant weight gain and getting off weight as a diabetic is hard enough. I have degenerative Arthritis in both knees and walking and exercises are done but not continously depending on mobilty for the day/week.
This is happening to me to. I am newly diagnosed with type 1 on 12/14/09. I am taking Lantus and Humalog. I have gains 10lbs. I watch what I am eating and I exercise. Nothing helps. I am so frustrated because I worked so hard to lose weight. Over the past 10 months (before I was type 1) I lost 40 lbs (30lbs of it was hard work the last 10lbs was from the diabetes). I worked out and ate good. Now I am seeing the weight come back and fast. It doesn't matter if I worked out or not the weight is coming back. I constantly feel bloated. I don't want to take the insulin anymore.
I don't want to take any insulin either. They finally took me off the lantus after 2 years. They put me on novolog and I gained another 10pds. I can see maybe its me if it was a steady weight gain, but its NOT. I go on new meds. I gain weight within the first couple of months and my body plateau's at that weight. Then I can't lose anything. What else am I supposed to do. I excercise ALOT and try to eat healthy!
Hi there,
Has anyone checked the ingredients in your insulin, you may be having a reaction to the preservatives in them, I took Levemir for two days and woke up with severe headache, also I have heavy metals, which can block insulin from going into the cells, I think everyone who is diabetic needs to be checked for heavy metals, mercury can cause diabetes...most people have had a amalgam filling at least once in their mouth, if they are over the age of 30...just fyi... if anyone is interested in learning about heavy metals and the problems they cause in the body do research on the net.. ps metacresol and zinc are problems in insulin, they just pulled teeth adhesive off the market that had too much zinc in it so I imagine injecting it everday could cause problems too, also insulin is a sulfur drug and you could be having sulfur sensitvity..which can cause headaches...diabetics should be taking lots of minerals too especially magnesium, if you are interested check out www.amalgamillness.com (epsom salt baths are great twice a week with 4 cups of epsom salt and hot water soak for 30 minutes) diabetes is very stressful on the body and magnesium helps that.. Namaste greatpersun

Jodi, I'm having the same problem now that I'm taking Lantus. I'm curious - did you switch back to Humulin N ? If so, were you able to shed the weight ? I am hoping my doctor will let me switch back - gaining sudden weight has been crazy and I agree - no amount of exercise or diet changes seems to help. I've never had a weight problem before, and am just now realizing that it could be the Lantus that is contributing to the changes.
