Type 1 diabetic for 22 yrs. How common is it to have complications
As I was saying..I maintained my weight and for the most part my blood sugars have always been a roller coaster. I am 45 yrs old...My doctors are confused,I have become very sensetive to my insulian. I used to have to do 60 units of Lantas and I now do 1 unit, and novolog is usually 1 or a half unit..They do all kinds of tests and can't find out why I tend to drop to as low as 8 or as high as 500.. I have been diagnosed with Autonomic neuropthy..I have had seizers from the lows and pass out sometimes when my blood sugars are pretty normal... They say that it could be from my blood pressure droping.. And my insurance doesn't cover very much.. So theres not much else that can be done..I have lost my driving privlages and someone has to be with my most of the time... Are there other diabetics who have had somthing like this happen??? I am not like the text book diabetic.. Tryed the insulan pump and had to many lows from it, Very Confusing..
Thank You

I've been diabetic for 36 uears diagnosed at the age of 5. I have had similar lows and highs in blood glucose reading. This started for me after i;ve been diabetis foe 23 years. At this time I was placed on an insulin pump. It is a challenge you do need to work with doctors very closelyand monitor all of your food intake(amounts of carbohydrates). It can be overwhelming in itself no matter how long you'e been diabetic. Any stress or injuries can make blood glucose levels fluctuate. When mine started I was weight lifting and droped 200lbs doing a bench press. At the time I didn't know I severed a nerve at C-5 in my neck losing all funtion lifing and numbing in both arms and could't feel them. Alot of the doctors I had been seeing thought it was neuropathy. I never questioned it at first and I started to think about my injury and how it happeded I kept on looking and searching 6 years and 8-9 doctors later and alot of physical thearapy later found I sereved a nerve at the root in my neck at C-5.
The Neurologist that found this was at the Mayo Clinic. It sometime takes determination to really find out your own problem. Diabetes affects so many things in the body but also especially the nervous system. I have been free of continual numbing for about a year now and without neuropathic drugs. I also feel natural products and herbs, are for me, the way to go. As always check with your doctors for treatment, My question for you is have you had any accidents or injuries prior to
you blood sugar going haywire?

Hello! I haven't been a diabetic as long as you have or have any complications but what I can tell you is that you are not alone. There are many people out there struggling with Diabetes and who have complications. I agree with Tamara, the nervous system always seem to get attacked for some reason. I think with the proper medication, blood glucose control and care from your healthcare team I think you can get right back on track. I know you mentioned that you can't drive. There is a great online community called Tudiabetes.com. There is a lot of people who have been through what you are going through right now. I know speaking from my own experience it's good to surround yourself with people who understand diabetes. I hope this helps
