typ2 diabetes/A1c of 6.5%?
Iam a 69 white male, height 6'1", weight 250, physically active who has been recently diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes. MyA1c was 6.5%. I have been on methrotreaxe and predisone for 1 year and have developed tingling in both feet (3-4 months). My physician placed me on Glucaphoge 500mg. once per day. Question is this really type 2?
yes- steroids can induce type II by increasing insulin resistance
normallly, if someone with a family history of type II gets a gut/gains weight, insulin resistance starts to develop. and unless they lose the weight, they get type II. Since most people gain weight as they get older, this is why it's "adult onset". Of course nowadays, if you get a 200#+ teenager, they get insulin resistant/type II at a much younger age.
steroids alter the hormonal response to insulin, and increase resistance on their own. and of course most people eat more/gain weight on steroids for the double whammy.
best you can do is try to lose some weight- metformin causes weight loss- this will help to keep your sugar controlled so the damage to your body will be minimal. Good luck and remember, if it's not working out, just take more steroids- this will qualify you for at least one professional sport.

Reese-
I agree with Frank. Yes, you are considered a Type 2. I would also like to touch on the "tingling" your having in your feet. You may want to talk to your Doctor, sounds like you maybe getting a case of diabetic neuropathy. I am not sure if you have any information on it but if you click here it will explain what neuropathy is. Please inform your Physician about the tingling in your feet, he or she can run proper test to see if you have neuropathy.
