If your Doctor did not send you to a Diabetes education program, I highly recommend that you request it.  My Doctor sent me to the local hospital and the program included an education on what diabetes is, how it progresses, health care, it covered the available drugs, and it also included a session with a nutritionists that gave me an individualized diet plan that was very easy to follow.  If you get the proper information, it makes things a lot easier to deal with.
