The first step for type 2 diabetes is to reduce weight and increase exercise. For some patients, this can reduce blood sugar enough. A diet that is around 1600 calories daily will be useful to lower your weight and still be healthly.  Increase in your diet fruit, vegetables, and nuts.

If this is NOT effective, there are generic medications that can be obtained to lower the blood sugar. Metformin is probably the first one to take since it can aid weight loss. Metformin should NOT be taken if your kidneys are not working well.
