Vivian,

It sounds like your mother is taking the right steps in trying to exercise and change her diet. For more information on how she can improve her diet click here. However, if your mother's sugar levels have remained high even with regular exercise and a healthy diet, I would take her to visit her docotr.

Diabetes type 2 (over 10 years), retinopathy, low carb now.

Sunday, June 08, 2008

Read as much as you can about low carb diets and diabetes.  I was diagnosed over 10 years ago.  With a low carb diet (less than 15-20 carbs per meal), and regular exercise, I have totally normal blood sugars.  The recommended diet is way too high carb, and out of date for what we know now.

Also, the recommendation to "don't go below 130 carbs per day" is total bunk!  Carbs raise blood glucose levels, and 130 carbs is outrageous.  Think of it this way, if you found out that you are allergic to cats, and your doctor recommended that the treatment is to adopt a houseful, you'd absolutely refuse, wouldn't you?  Research, research, research.

Since she's taking insulin, she will have to be careful when she reduces carbs b/c her insulin needs will go down.  Hopefully, she is monitoring her bgs and is knowledgeable about what to do.

If her doctor is recommending a diet with lots of carbs, find one who understands that carbs are not necessary for a healthy lifestyle.

Hope this helps,

Dee
