Q: Is it safe to combine amaryl with glucophage?

My mother has recently been given glucophage to take along with her amaryl that she has taken for years.  Consequently, she was very close to going into insulin shock and her blood sugar gets extremely low.  She has been testing her blood sugar 4 times a day as a result of this and it seems that the blood sugar fluctuates  but still gets very low (in the 40's)  The doctor cut the amaryl in half stating that that medication can cause the blood sugar level to go low but can't glucophage do the same thing.... She is taking 1000mg of that.

Dee-

Hello! You will need to contact your Mother's physician.  He or she will be the only person to be able to track and trend her Blood Sugar levels and make the correct adjustments if needed.  You may also want to talk a pharmacist to see if the medication you listed can be taken together.

Hi Dee,

I am also on Amaryl and Glucophage. I take 4 mg of the Amaryl and 2000 a day of Glucophage. It sounds like your mother needs to have the doctor look at her numbers and adjust her medication. I would think the combination is working for your mom, but now she needs to reduce the dosage. Almost all medications used to control Diabetes can cause hypoglycemia so it's very good that you help monitor it.

Take care. Please stay in touch and let us know how you and your mom are doing!
