Q: About Cortozone Shots and diabetes

Recently, I had a cortozone shot administered due to severe knee pain where surgery was not an option. Since then my blood sugar level have been hard to keep at a hundred. They been running around two hundred without a change in diet. Does getting a cortosone shot affect your ability to control your blood sugar levels?

Yes, my doctor's office gave me one for allergies.. never again -- my BG was staying at round 140 !!!  I was mad they did not warn me !  It lasted for a day , or two, then it went back to normal.. thankfully... BUT  if you get them often, they will exacerbate diabetes in a big way.   One of my friends became diabetic, and is on insulin, because of all the steroids/ cortisone used for his condition.

I have been Type 1 since the age of 13. Last year I saw a rheumetologist for the pain in my index fingers. I was given a choice between going through the cost of trying prescriptions until we found one that worked or getting injections in both hands. I was warned that my blood sugar would stay elevated for up to two days after these injections. I chose the injections anyway & found that he was right. I did suffer elevated blood sugars afterwards for more like three days. Eventually I got it back under control & I think you can too.

Thanks Mary, I back in control again, but boy I was a little alarmed at the amount of humalog it took for about 3 days as you indicated.  I was very cautious due to the amount I used due to I just knew that it would have a negative effect, but I really appreciate your response, if I have to take another one in the future, I know exactly what to expect.

Oh yes, my knee dr. warned me that blood sugar would go up for maybe 5 to six days, & it certainly did.

Thanks Roxana,

I wish my doctor would have warned me, I was in the dark for awhile, but hey I'm in control again.  Best wishes and hang in there with your diabetes.

I am always put on steroids (cortisone, prednisone) when I am admitted to the hospital for my emphysema, also for my colitis.  I am then sent home on a tapering dose.  For the time I am on the steroids my blood sugar is all over the place.  Steroids always raise the blood sugar and will continue to do so as long as you're on them.  If it's just a single shot, it wouldn't last too long.

I had oral cortizone for my lupus. and my bg level skyrocketed, too.  I told my doctor and he told me to double my diabetes meds while on steroids.  After I went off the steroids, my bg levels returned to my personal normal.  ne of the truly terrible things about diabetes is how it interacts with other condtions and their treatment.  I wish you the best!
