I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes in 1992. After several years of oral medications I was put on Lantus as well. I take 25 units of Lantus twice a day. This has worked well for me in the past. In 2004, I had 1/3 of my pancreas removed (along with my spleen). I now also take NovoLog at each meal. Until last week, I was also on 1000 mg of Metformin twice a day. I started developing a reaction to the Metformin so my doctor told me to reduce the Metformin 500 mg twice a day. He said if the problem persisted to stop the Metformin completely. I had to stop the Metformin.
My last C-Peptide test was about 2 points/numbers to high to qualify for a pump.
Now my question. Is there a limit to the number of units of either Lantus or NovoLog that you can safely take? Since dropping the Metformin, I have had to increase my NovoLog by about 5 to 10 units (from 20 - 25 units). Even that, more often than not, doesn't seem to be enough. I went for glucose readings ranging from 70 to 160 with an occasional 200+ to an almost constant 200+.
