Q: 67 yr old female sometimes weak & Shaky for no apparent reason is diabetes a possibility

I am 67 yr. old female...I have a younger brother with diabetes 2.  I eat lots of fruits and veg, not too much meat, I do  weight training/ muscle strentghing at the gym 3 x a week and walk approx 4-5 hours  a week , am generally healthy and probably could lose 5 - l0 pounds.  I do feel weak and shaky periodically for no apparent reason..this lasts usually 5-10 minutes and does go away  when I have something to eat...even tho I may have just eaten a couple of hours beforehand...this usually only  happens in the morning an hour or two after breakfast..I usually eat whole grain cereal and fruit for breakfast.....seems to happen more often lately.  I had a check up a couple of months ago and am in good health.

I am wondering if It is  possibe that I have any  form of  diabetes.

Shirley-

Wow! I wish I could exercise as much as you do!!! There could be a number of issues, diabetes being one. You should consult your Physician if you are having symptoms of hypoglycemia, that way you can rule out diabetes or getting treated for diabetes if it is the diagnosis your physician gives you.

Do you have access to a glucose monitor? If you do you might want to check your fasting blood sugar levels, they should be under 110. If you see anything higher than 110, CONSULT with your Physician.

I am diabetic and the symptoms I had were extreme thirst, yeast infection, and extreme weight loss just to name a few. Click here "Diabetes Symptoms" and it will lead you to Diabetes symptoms for Type 1 and Type 2. Thank you for being Pro-Active when it comes to your health. I hope what you are experiencing isn't anything serious.

I agree that you should rule out low blood sugar, if possible.  Interestingly, I was privy to an experiment where we administered test meals and blood sugar responses.  Some patients got low blood sugar after a high fiber breakfast (all bran/milk/fruit/bran muffin).  So if your sugar is low, you might want to actually eat less fiber in the morning!- maybe drink fruit juice instead of fresh fruit, or a low fiber cereal.

My other guesses would be hormonal- hormones can peak/trough at regular intervals in the AM, causing sugar swings; or blood pressure- make sure you are well hydrated.

Good luck- I always feel weak and shaky before public speaking :)
