Q: My son has symptoms of a diabetic - when he eats his blood sugar spikes but then drops extremely low

My son has symptoms of a diabetic - when he eats his blood sugar spikes but then drops extremely low.  If he eats multiple small means to minimize this effect his body weight drops as his metabolism increases.  He is a weight lifter but has never used steroids but the mood swings caused by his wildly flucuating blood sugar levels makes it hard for him to maintain employment.  Our local doctor has said he has "reactive hypoglycimia" and there is nothing to be done.  Why type of specialist can we go see to help when the general practioner is not willing or able to help?  Please - my son is suicidal and I need to find help.  Thanks.

I am a diabetic, type 2, and my oldest son is a type 1 diabetic.... the type of specialist you want to look for, concerning blood sugars etc... would be an endocrinologist.  Blood sugars do run your emotions, I pray that your son finds the help he needs and that you can have some peace in this situation.
