Saturday, October 30, 2010 Cindy asks

Q: I am not sure if I should be taking Metformin or any other drug yet. My AIC has come in twice now at 6.2 and my Dr. considers me to be prediabetic. Considering the side effects of the drug in

addition to the other drugs I am taking. It all began with high BP for which I am taking pills that expand the blood vessels and it is well under control. The Dr. then added a diuretic to help my kidneys which were at 50% capacity. He next added Lipitor to help with the kidneys although I did not have high cholesterol and my HDL was not above normal. Now he's wanting me to take Metformin which is is for my AIC and is supposed to help my kidneys. My kidney function now is at 41%. I am overweight but really on a super diet now. I am 63. What is your opinion, based on this small amount of info.
