Q: I have DM Type 2. Is it okay to have a glass of wine daily?

Andrew-

Hi! Alcohol can cause hypoglycemia in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.  You have to watch the amount you drink because you are putting yourself at risk for a Diabetic Ketoacidosis. If you are type 2 and drinking alcohol with metformin you are taking a risk of developing lactic acidosis.  Frankl said it best- If you have liver problems you shouldn't drink. If you decide to drink make sure you test your blood sugar often and make sure your not alone.

yes- red wine is healthy for diabetics- however, it can cause hypoglycemia, so drinking with a meal is best- also, if you have liver damage, or are a closet rummy, best to abstain- cheers! Reply
