Q: should i cut down on protein to help my kidneys function better?

You should cut down on the protein:) it could help save your kidneys.  Here is a link to Davita (specialize in dialysis), their site has Kidney Friendly meals. Hope this helps.

The short answer is yes. However, I would recommend a low phosphorus diet. Phosphorus can stress the kidneys, so get a food list of high phosphorus foods and cut back. This is indirectly lowering protein (most high phos foods are high pro!), but may be more optimal for prolonging kidney function. Basically, if your kidney function is declining, and you are eating well, protein is not doing you alot of good. Reply
