Q: A1C WHAT IS THAT? HOW DO YOU CALCULATE IT? BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS?

Lately I have been seeing information about A1C levels.  I apologize for my ignorance, but my Dr. never told me about A1C, what is it? How do you calculate it?  He did tell me to get my blood sugar below 126.  I'm just wondering if that is correct.  Can somebody help me please?  Thanking you in advance.  Karen

Hi Karen,

I'm Ginger from HealthCentral's Type 1 Diabetes site for young adults...but we've ot a lot of info over there that is useful for blood sugar control and nutrition advice for anyone with either Type of diabetes.

Check out this blog of A1C measurements: http://www.healthcentral.com/diabeteens/c/27511/75708/understanding/?ic=4020

Your A1C is a blood test your doctor should perform for you at the hospital. Next time you're there, print this article out and bring it with you. Ask him to report to you your A1C!
