Q: Told I am diabetic, but given no instructions on life changes other than take these pills.

To check my thyroid level, my doctor ordered a blood screening.  When he recieved it back he announced that I was now diabetic, had high cholesteral and high triglicerides.  He handed me 3 prescriptions and told me to come back in 4 weeks.  No instructions were given other that take these pills once a day and then come back.  Everything I find on the internet seems to be written in a special code that only those versed in diabetes control truly understand.  Help please.  I do not even know were to start.  My blood work six months ago showed none of these problems.

I am depressed about the drastic health change and frustrated to tears that the only things I find are: insulin shots, follow your doctors eating plan, and exercise.

How are things going for you now? I think the best advice I can give is to be aware of how high carb food affects you--it is not the sugar that matters most but the carb content. Often sugar-free foods have suprisingly high carbs. I would suggest a low carb breakfast like eggs to start the day and I suggest testing your sugar to see where you are at throughout the day. All diabetics can learn a lot from testing their bloodsugar throughout the day--before and after meals, before and after exercise, waking up and going to bed and in the middle of the night. If you did this for a day or two even you could see the patterns and notice how certain things affect you.

Besides taking the pills, follow a good diet.Avoid sweets, potatoes.cut down fats.Go for a brisk walk for atleast 30 to 40 minutes daily or some good exercise for 30 minutes. There is nothing to worry about and take the medicines regularly prescribed by your doctor
