Q: Changing insulin.

I have been getting free samples of insulin from my doctor (who is not an endocrinologist). I have been taking Apidra and Lantus for a few years. When I cam in to get more samples, my doctor only had Novolog and Levemir available and told me that it was fine to switch to those. I'm not so sure about that, though. Wouldn't the dose have to be changed?

Hi Zee,

Novolog and Levemir are made by novonordisk.  They are very comparable to Lantus and Apidra which are made by Sanofi Aventis.  In fact, I switched to levemir after 2 years on Lantus and found that it doesn't sting as much when injected and I'm finding I'm taking less.

My endo had said that most people need a couple more units of levemir when they switch from lantus.  Levemir is less acidic than lantus which is why it doesn't sting.  You may find you like it better.
