Concerned for my friend with Type 1 Diabetes.

My friend has Type 1 diabetes. We have been spending a lot of time together lately because he is going through some terrible family issues. I have noticed that he doesn't check his blood sugars like he should (from what I've read) and he often makes comments about how high (600) and how low (70) it is when he does check it. I ask questions about what it's supposed to be, and he acts like it's no big deal (even though I've noticed it fluctuates to extremes on a daily basis).

He has an insulin pump, so I had previously assumed that he does what he is supposed to; however, the more I read, the more concerned I get. Yesterday, he went from really high (like 400 something) to really low (like 70) in a matter of hours, he drinks alcohol regularly and eats lots of fast food (burgers, etc). I am his friend and don't want to be pushy or overbearing because he has a lot on his mind right now, but I really care about him and I'm just wondering if I should say something? And if so, how??? I'm sure he knows more about it than I do. (this is new to me, but I'm very concerned about his health now) I'm afraid he'd blow it off or tell me I don't know what I'm talking about...
