Q: Is medication reduction good?

My last A1C was 5.9 and my most recent one was even lower at 5.7. That’s translates to an average blood glucose of around 111. Since I have maintained such a good level on my A1C they are going to drop the dosage on my Metformin. On one level I’m glad to decrease my meds, but on another level I wonder if this doesn’t just make it harder to keep my blood glucose in line and set me up for failure? I know that my current levels are good, and I want to keep them that way. I’m not sure how much more I can do naturally to make things better? I’m already going to the gym very regularly and eat much healthier than before…

Chelsand-

You have a great A1C. I awesome you don't see too many highs are lows.  I wouldn't worry about the reduction in your medication.  It has happened to me a lot in the past and I thought of it as a graduation type of thing. You take good care of your diabetes and that's how you are rewarded. I am not a Doctor but I am assuming your Physician is lowering your medication because he doesn't want you to experience any hypoglycemic episodes.  Be Happy and celebrate.  I would like to suggest if you see your BG's going high after your dosage was changed contact your Physician ASAP.

Just keep doing what you are doing, exercise and watching foods-- while trying to avoid processed foods, too many starches and flours. Keep an eye on portions. Luckily, I have not needed meds, and my A1c has been running from 5.5 to 5.8 . You can do it ! And your A1c is great ! Reply
