Q: why does blood sugar go up while exercising

Recently while exercising, my blood sugar was 171 after I stopped. The it went up to 188 about 15 minutes later. Within an hour it was 99 without eating anything. When I started exercising it was 121. What is going on?

Hey Becky,

The reason that your blood sugar may go up during exercise is because during physical activity your body releases the sugar stored in your muscles and liver in order to provide energy. When your body is excited, like during exercise, it releases a hormone called adrenaline. Adrenaline releases the stores of sugar in your muscle and liver and results in raised blood sugars. After exercise, you may want to wait about 30 minutes to test in order to get a more accurate reading.
