Q: I have had Diabetes 2 for 3 years and for the past 6 months my ankles and feet are so swollen

I have had Diabetes 2 for 3 years and for the past 6 months my ankles and feet are so swollen by the end of my work day. I have a desk job by I do get up every 30 minutes or so and walk around. I also have high blood pressure and my cardiologist has me on 2 blood pressure medications along with a water pill (40 mg) once a day. He increased it from 20 mg a month ago and still the swelling is bad. It is very painful. Feels like my feet are badly bruised. Can this be caused by my Diabetes? I monitor my numbers daily (about 3 times) and they are getting on the high side 195 before a meal. I take Lantis once a day 20 units. My A1C number is good 6.0 but this was taken about 4 months ago. I have been under a lot of stress for the past 6 months and was wondering if this could cause my numbers to go up.  Thank you for your help.

you want to make sure you don't have congestive heart failure- the worse symptom for this is shortness of breath, so you may need to restrict your fluid intake- and you want to cut back on salt as well- keeping your legs elevated or wearing special stockings should help as well- your blood sugar will not likely make you retain fluid- in fact, high sugar can dehydrate!- best you can do is try to lose some weight for heart health- and get rid of the stress- i hear aruba is nice this time of year... :)
