Why no alcoholic drink when taking Metformin?

The warning label on the bottle of my metformin/glucovance medication states: "DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES WHEN TAKING THIS MEDICATION". Why?

Hello! Drinking alcoholic beverages will taking any diabetic medication is prohibited. You can have hypoglycemic episodes and could be at risk for lactic acidosis. You should not drink heavy when taking the medication and if you have liver problems. You should consult with your Physician or Pharmacist. Click here, and it will take you to drug info.
