Pump Supplies - Any Advice?

I have worked for years to perfect my diabetic routine!  It has paid off and even though I have been a type 1 for more than 35 years, I am doing great with my insulin pump!

Well. I have discovered, I never knew how much I could take something for granted until I lost it.  I changed jobs recently, my new insurance does not cover any of my Minimed pump supplies.  What is worse, as a type 1 diabetic my new insurance company places me in the category of 'pre-existing' condition.... AKA waiting 12 months for diabetic follow up.  That is fine, I can wait it out, I have learned some very savy diabetic management - more than 35 years worth!!

However, I am now paying out of pocket for all Paradigm 522 supplies - the total is more than $350 a month (on top of paying for health insurance, thanks a lot).

Does anyone within range of this post have advice on buying pump supplies at a discount or know of any assistance programs?  I am lower middle class - make to much to qualify for the local 'low income' health programs, but just barely!

I appreciate all input!!

Hi! I am sorry to hear about your current situation! I don't think anyone should have to wait a year to receive health benefits because of Diabetes or any pre exsisting medical condition.

There is a non for profit organization called Ipump.org.  Ipump.org helps provide financial assistance to people with diabetes.  Here is the link to the website http://ipump.org/.  You may also try calling MiniMed, they may have a financial assistance program that may assist you in covering your pump supplies.

Unless you had a break in your health insurance coverage of 63 days, your new insurance company cannot consider your condition as pre-existing and not coverable for 12 months, as long as you had continous coverage under the old plan for 18 month. No insurance company can deny coverage for the condition unless you had a break in coverage 63 days or more. Check with you benefits advisor at your employer for assistance.
