Q: i am type two with depression. my depression is worse lately and my glucose numbers are very high and erratic. i take insulin because the pills cause my glucose to crash. what do you recommend?

i have had depression for many years and diabetes for about fifteen. at first i controlled the diabetes with pills and all was fine. then i lost some weight down to below two hundred. i am sixty four on fifteen september. i am seeing a pain clinic and have a "contract" to not get narcotics for pain etc. a few weeks back i was in agony and went to the pain clinic for a prescription who told me to go to urgent care and take of it. i got a prescription for three five mg oxycodone and was accused of violating the contract etc. they had not dealt with the situation although someone could have taken two minutes and written a scrip, i had had an appointment the day prior. my mood has been a roller coaster and my psychologist is trying to assist me in stabilysing. my blood glucose levels seem to be hyper whether i consume sucrose or clay, well not the latter but close as in protein. forrest

Hi there,

You're in a tricky position because:

1. anti-depressants and pain meds can lead to insulin insensitivity which will only increase your blood sugars and making Type 2 more challenging to control.

2. Erratic blood sugars lead to depression! Your brain is so reliant on that second by second delivery of glucose, that when we mess up how much it's getting, putting it through a vicious rollercoaster cycle on a regular basis, we were end up impacting our brain's ability to feel happy.
