I recently had my thyroid removed due to large nodules caused by Hashimoto's disease. I am still working with my doctor to optimize my hormone replacement medication. Since the surgery, my blood pressure has been elevated (+/- 150/95). My doctor put me on blood pressure medicine and it lowered to +/- 124/80. Then I went on a vacation for 10 days. When I returned, I did a new blood test and went to see the doctor. Now my blood pressure has returned to the elevated level of 155/93 (though I have not stopped taking medication), and my A1C reading is 6.1. Now my doctor says I am diabetic. She took my blood glucose level, which was 112 (about 2-3 hours after eating). Here's my question...is it possible that these blood pressure and sugar readings are related to the Hashimoto's and the thyroid removal? I was a reasonably healthy person just 6 months ago....now all of this is happening. For background info...I recently celebrated my 50th birthday, and I am overweight. I know I am at risk for diabetes and high blood pressure, so changing my lifestyle is probably warranted. But am I diabetic?
Also...my cholesterol has been consistently between 170 and 190.
