Wednesday, March 16, 2011 Sweetheart's mom asks

Q: Should diabetics eat "sugar free" jam that is primarily sweetened with grape juice with no worry?

The managers of our local country store told me, when I questioned their switching to "no sugar" preserves, that they were doing it so their diabetic customers could eat it. A lot of folks out here are morbidly overweight due to a combination of "sweet tea", fried everything and beer. My concern is that if a local diabetic is told they can consume this sugar free jam (which is sweetened with grape juice) with no worries, they will just "have at it". I would think that fructose could be just as damaging to a diabetic as sucrose. Eating a few grapes is one thing, concentrated grape juice a whole different matter. Please comment.

Your thinking about grape juice is right on track.  It has a glycemic index of 55 which is high.  All carbohydrates, especially fruit,  raise blood glucose.  Be sure to correct the person who said this and make sure his facts are straight before giving customers advice.

It should be noted that these "No Sugar Added" preserves don't usually have any less sugar than the others. They just get it from fruit, rather than cane.

These products are probably better for everyone, but no more diabetic-safe than the rest.

Agree w/the responses above.

My only other comment would be:  If one wants to see how a change in nutritional ingredients affects their blood glucose, it would be wise for one to whip out their meter and test the outcome after consumption.
