Diabetes is not the end of the world. In a way it is the beginning of a new life. With awareness about what to eat and not, regular exercise or walking, keeping up doctor's appointment and taking the medicines regularly should not scare anyone having diabetes

my son has been type I for 25 years and during that time has been on his high school swim team, graduated college, works for a good company, is healthy and leads a full life.  His diabetes is a constant companion but can be managed with effort.

First of all, know that there is hope and a lot of great info out there.  These websites are God-sends.  He will be put on a program and given the do's and dont's of Diabetes treatment.  There are several great meds out there too.  Talk to your doctors and make sure you are on board with their advice. Good Luck and hang in there.

The South Beach Diet is very helpful, and the Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load.  Processed carbs, flour , and sugar raise up blood sugars.  You are wonderful to be concerned.   If he has insurance, they will pay for a Nutritionist classes or onre on one - a certified Diabetes educator.  I have a list of all that helped me, and if you need more pointers in a simple list, just email me.   I have kept my hemoglobin A1c from 5.4 to 5.9  after diagnosis of insulin resistance.
