Hi Stuart, Thank you for your question. Metformin belongs to the drug class biguanides. It works by reducing the amount of sugar that the the liver produces. There are some side effects associated with metformin use, the most common of which are diarrhea and upset stomach. You can find other side effects, as well as more information about metformin  here.
